The Kenney Memorial Hospital

Dr. John A Kenney Sr. opened the Kenney Memorial

Hospital (later renamed "Community Hospital'), on September 1, 1927, in response to an absence of hospitals in New Jersey permitting African Americans access as physicians, interns, and nursing trainees as well as patients.

Once the hospital closed in 1934, the building was purchased and is now occupied by New Salem Baptist Church. Dr. Kenney's granddaughter, Linda Kenney Miller, authored a biography about the life of Dr. Kenney Sr. titled Beacon on the Hill.

In honor of Dr. John A. Kenney, The Friends of Dr. John A. Kenney Inc., are endeavoring to construct an interactive museum in the former laboratory room of the hospital. Once complete, the museum will highlight the remarkable achievements of Dr. Kenney while providing inspiration to visiting schools and the community.

The Friends of Dr. John A. Kenney Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to promoting the legacy of Kenney Memorial Hospital later known as the Community Hospital. Your contribution to this cause is greatly appreciated.
